  • The medication works best when taken within 24 hours. Similarly, it should be taken within 72 hours after sex to prevent getting a sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD).

  • Doxy-PEP has been shown to prevent 80-90% of chlamydia and syphilis cases and approximately 50% of gonorrhea cases.

Who should use doxy-PEP?
  • This treatment is recommended for men who have sex with men and transgender women who have had a bacterial STI in the past.

How do you use doxy-PEP?
  • Doxycycline (100 mg) is prescribed as two pills taken in one dose, preferably within 24 hours of exposure, but always within 72 hours.

  • Take Doxy-PEP after condomless oral, anal, or insertive vaginal sex.

  • You can take this medication as often as every day if there are daily exposures, but never more than once per day.

  • Additionally, it’s advised to take doxy-PEP with at least 8 oz. of water and remain standing for the next 30-60 minutes.

Important Usage Tips
  • Let your CuraPlus provider know if you have any allergies to doxycycline or other tetracyclines to help prevent adverse reactions.

  • This medication is intended for individuals already using or planning to start PrEP.

  • CuraPlus only prescribes and ships doxy-PEP together with your initial PrEP prescription or quarterly refill.

  • Do not share your prescription with others.

  • Routine STI testing is essential, since some infections may not cause noticeable symptoms.

  • Use sunscreen while taking doxycycline, as it can increase sensitivity to sunlight.

  • Avoid consuming dairy products, calcium, antacids, or multivitamins within 2 hours before or after taking your doxy-PEP dose.

Responsible Use Guidelines

CuraPlus is committed to improving the sexual health and general wellness of LGBTQ+ community members. We recognize research is ongoing to evaluate the known benefit of this approach in HIV PrEP users and people living with HIV in reducing STI rates, weighed against the known and yet-unknown effect of this intervention on bacterial resistance and the microbiome. The CuraPlus initiative involves careful prescribing, judicious refills, and consistent patient counseling. We are engaging with investigators to evaluate our initiative’s effectiveness in reducing incident STIs along with other implications
